3 Top Tips to Keep Your Stairlift in Super Shape
Approximately 53 million Americans live with a disability, and according to a recent study, the most common disability is associated with limited mobility. At the same time, many Americans want to live in their homes for as long as they can, which is why so many have been investing in a wide range of mobility products. For those who live in home with stairs, easy to use stairlifts are among the simplest and most dependable devices designed to help users move between the various levels of their homes. Of course, to keep your stairlift as safe and reliable as possible, it does require a moderate amount of maintenance. Here are just a few maintenance tips to help you keep your dependable stairlift running smoothly.
Consult the manual for model-specific instructions and warranty details
While not exactly a physical maintenance tip, this piece of advice can save you some serious time, and possibly money. The owner’s manual that came with your device is filled with useful information regarding maintenance procedures that are specific to that brand or model of stairlift. More importantly, it’s critical to check the warranty information. If there are specific maintenance tasks that will void the warranty, it’s best you know beforehand than afterward, when it’s too late.
Keep the track lubricated
One of the main tasks you’ll need to perform in order to maintain a safe and dependable stairlift is keep the track lubricated. An improperly cleaned or lubricated stairlift can easily collect dirt, dust, pet hair, and other debris, increasing the risk of an accident, and after all, over 50% of all falls among older adults take place at home. Fortunately, your stairlift only needs to be lubricated every few months. Just make sure to fully disable the stairlift before attempting lubrication.
Keep an eye on the batteries and other movable components
Experts say the area that requires the most care and maintenance is typically the battery and other internal components of your stairlift.
“Batteries and movable parts on your stairlift will probably be the parts that need the most care. Movable parts on any machine always receive the most abuse but if you keep them maintained, you should have no problem keeping them in good shape and making them last a long time. On a stairlift, the swivel seat and the track itself should be examined frequently for needed repairs,” writes Stairlift Buyer’s Guide.
By 2030, older adults (seniors) will account for roughly 20% of the U.S. population. Understanding these tips for proper stairlift maintenance is the key to maximizing household mobility and safety.
